KVK Ernakulam launches Farmer Field School on seed production of tuber and spices crops
The FFS will offer technology demonstrations in the field throughout the whole duration of these crops helping the beneficiaries learn while doing all aspects of seed production over different seasons

Kochi: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ernakulam under the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) launched a Farmer Field School (FFS) on seed production of tuber and spices crops at the vocational training centre of Chavara Special School in Koonammavu.

The programme is being implemented in the 1.5-acre fallow land owned by the vocational training centre with the farming-cum-training of elephant foot yam Sree Padma of ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram, ginger varada and turmeric pragati and pratibha of Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikkode (IISR Kozhikkode).

The farmer field school will offer technology demonstrations in the field throughout the whole duration of these crops helping the beneficiaries learn while doing all aspects of seed production over different seasons.

The Krishi Group registered by the parent-teacher association of the Chavara special school is the beneficiary of the programme. Group members, including students and parents, will be given training on various interventions needed at each stage of plant growth. Technologies for various seed production, harvest, seed treatment, packing, branding and marketing would be imparted to the participants.

The programme is expected to conclude in September 2023 along with crop harvest. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra aims to develop satellite seed production centres producing and supplying quality seeds of varieties developed by the research organisations of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) while attracting youngsters to farming. Shoji Joy Edison, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) of KVK is the implementing officer.
