India needs promotion GM food technologies: PHD Chamber

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday urged the government to promote and propagate Genetically Modified (GM) foods to enable India catapult its agriculture and horticulture economy and eventually with GM foods applications, India can be one of the largest exporters of its agriculture produces.
The Chamber also appealed to the government emphasising that time now has come to prepare a ground for 4th industrial revolution in India’s forthcoming industrial policy statement which is already fallen on public domain so that all and relevant emerging issues on industrial front are addressed at the right time.
The aforesaid observations were made by Sr. Vice President, PHD Chamber, Rajeev Talwar at a Seminar on Industrial Growth: Burning Issues and Way Forward which was presided over by Former Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Ajay Dua in which Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, Dr. Niti Bhasin; Fellow, National Council of Applied Economic Research, Dr. Bornali Bhandari; Chairman, Industry Affairs Committee, PHD Chamber, Sanjay Aggarwal and its Co-Chairmen, Ram A Poddar and Vikram Agarwal along with Chamber’s Chief Economist, Dr. SP Sharma were participants.
Talwar highlighted that countries that adopted GM food technologies and their applications to improve the productivity and quality of their agriculture products have become net exporters of food products from food importing nations in the last couple of years and India needs to look at this with proactive mindset.
According to him, time has come for India to prepare a solid ground for forthcoming industrial revolution so that it does not miss out an opportunity to become one of the lead economies in the world in next few years.
The best way to prepare the ground would be that the forthcoming industrial policy statement should have everything in terms of policy documentation that can address in advance the issues that the industry has been confronting with so that its manufacturing value change is linked with global manufacturing processes in which automation and uses of artificial intelligence are so well assimilated.
In his address, Dr. Dua felt that capacity generation in power sector has hardly went up this year as compared to last year on account of depressed economic sentiments and increasing production of non-renewable therefore, the new industrial policy statement should be so comprehensive and intensive carrying addressal mechanism for all industrial problems.
