Farmers’ body welcomes Congress Party’s statement to enact law to guarantee MSP at Swaminathan formula

New Delhi: Jai Kisan Andolan congratulates the Indian National Congress party for announcing that it has decided to enact a law to guarantee Minimum Support Price (MSP) based on the C2+50 per cent price formula postulated by the Swaminathan Commission so that all farmers get MSP for their crops. Jai Kisan Andolan hopes and expects that the proposed law will cover all crops and produce of all farmers and will have fail-safe mechanisms through which farmers will receive MSP.

While welcoming this decision and announcement, Yogendra Yadav, Founder, Jai Kisan Andolan said, “This is a historic announcement by the Congress Party that has the potential to uplift the economic condition of farmers of India and bring sweeping change in the rural economy chain and indeed the economy of the nation.”

Avik Saha, National President, Jai Kisan Andolan said, “Legal Guarantee of MSP on C2+50% formula has been the oldest and strongest unfulfilled demand of all farmers of India and this announcement changes everything. Now the ruling party BJP will have to seriously electorally consider the MSP guarantee law and I expect all political parties to support the announcement.”

Jai Kisan Andolan believes that without a law to guarantee MSP, sustainable livelihood and dignified life for the vast majority of farmers and farmworkers cannot be achieved. Farmers receiving guaranteed prices will also lead to their being able to escape the debt cycle in which they are presently trapped. With the collective will of political parties across the spectrum, the law to guarantee MSP at MS Swaminathan formula can be ensured and will become a reality for Indian farmers.
